Unlocking the Recreation Vault
Written by Scott Silver

Pasted below is the key to a treasure trove provided by the American Recreation Coalition and accessible to anyone interested in learning more about the Brave New World being planned for outdoor recreation. The amount of material continued within the links they have provided  is overwhelming in both quantity and detail.  It confirms in exquisite, or perhaps excruciating, detail the prediction made by Aldous Huxley in 1932 of what was to become of Outdoor Recreation. It confirms much of what I, myself, have been saying for the past decade.

Here is Huxley's prediction. It is a flawless and precise statement of the conspiracy being advanced by the recreation industry and their federal land management partners. If you wish to learn more, you now have the key.

Patiently the D.H.C. [Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning] explained. If the children were made to scream at the sight of a rose, that was on grounds of high economic policy. Not so very long ago (a century or thereabouts), Gammas, Deltas, even Epsilons, had been conditioned to like flowers -- flowers in particular and nature in general. The idea was to make them want to be going out into the country at every available opportunity, and so compel them to consume transportation.

"And didn't they consume transport?' asked the student.

'Quite a lot," the D.H.C. replied. 'But nothing else.'

Primroses and landscapes, he pointed out, have one grave defect: they are gratuitous. A love of nature keeps no factories busy. Is was decided to abolish the love of nature, at any rate amongst the lower classes to abolish the love of nature, but not the tendency to consume transport. For of course it was essential that they should keep on going to the country, even thought they hated it. The problem was to find an economically sounder reason for consuming transport than a mere affection for primroses and landscapes. It was duly found.

'We condition the masses to hate the country,' concluded the Director. 'But simultaneously we condition them to love all country sports. At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport. Hence those electric shocks.'

'I see,'said the student, and was silent, lost in admiration.

Partners Outdoors 2008

“Unlocking the Fun and Benefits of the Outdoors to All Americans, and Especially Youth”

January 13-16, 2008

Partners Outdoors 2008 hosted over 125 participants from the recreation community – representing both the public and private sectors – at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Snowbird, Utah. The four-day conference highlighted the essential need for partnerships in tackling the challenge of engaging our youth in the great outdoors.

The conference’s keynote address was given by Lyle Laverty, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. Mr. Laverty encouraged the Partners Outdoors participants to go beyond “happy talk” and take action to deal with a changing America. While acknowledging that the federal land-management agencies are facing “wicked problems” with no easy answers, Mr. Laverty expressed his belief that partnerships are a simple strategic way to meet the challenge of unlocking the outdoors for Americans. Mr. Laverty concluded his remarks with a charge to act on the information received and the recommendations made at Partners Outdoors and to “do the right, right thing.”

Panels of federal agency and recreation industry leaders then discussed programs, initiatives and partnerships focused on the recreational needs of the public, especially today’s youth, and effective ways of meeting those needs.

The Partners Outdoors participants also rotated through four action team discussions led by a core group. Each individual had the opportunity to share insights on four “action vehicles” for unlocking the fun and benefits of the outdoors: A New National Commission on Americans Outdoors; Great Outdoors Month; Action by Other Organizations and Key Contacts; and 2008 Elections and Transitions. The teams produced substantive recommendations for follow-up action throughout the year.

The conference closed with inspirational remarks from legendary Dick Bass, Chairman and CEO of Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort and world renowned author of Seven Summits. Mr. Bass praised the Partners Outdoors participants as “part of a movement of human health and protection of our earth’s resources” and encouraged them to persevere in their efforts on behalf of people and the outdoors.

Amazingly accurate, was Huxley. But then, what has ever been the purpose of industry? To use the raw world to make things for people to buy to generate money so--implicit in that understanding--the ultimate result follows. Corporate Capitalism's ultimate purpose is to make everyone buy everything.

I spent time looking over Partners Outdoors 2008, and it struck me as a corporation trying to figure out ways to increase business & revenue. To be honest, it turns me off to nature. It makes me feel like I'm being targeted for exploitation, and that my pocket book is the real concern, not my love for nature.

It sickens me.

I should have said: "It turns me off to 'their' nature. And that's the problem isn't? It's THEIR nature, and not the publics any longer. In short, thieves conspired, and are conspiring, working in concert all the way to top, to steal our nature from us.

And if we don't feel that it's ours, we don't go visit it. We stay away from what's not ours. So " research shows that across the U.S. and in other developed nations, people are spending far less time outdoors than ever before."

If they're going to turn our nature into their nature, and turn it into a nature Disneyland, then they are going to be competing with Disneyland, TV, the Web, and Video games. When it's all commercialism there's no difference; nature and Halo III, are equal. They both cost money. But Halo III is easier, with all the conveniences, including time, handy, so nature will lose out in the competition.

If they were serious about wanting kids, and adults, to be attracted to nature, they'd take all the fees off of visiting our public lands ; they'd put public money to the task. In truth, If we judge by where our government spends money we'd have to conclude that, they'd rather the kids join the Army, than visit nature ; or join one of the thousands of corporations contracted out by the government. That's where they want the kids. That or to be just, willing simple-minded consumers.

They steal our lands, and then complain, and aggressively market us, when we don't want to rent back a small parcel, for just a little spell.
