Hodel Receives Mixed Support from Conservation and Recreation Groups
Reaction to the likely confirmation of Donald Hodel as interior
secretary was mixed last week, with at least one conservation group
opposing his move from DOE to the Interior Dept., another non-committal
and a recreation group lavishing Hodel with praise at the Senate Energy
Committee confirmation hearings. No mineral-industry groups or
associations testified.
The Wilderness Society opposed the Hodel nomination, arguing that the
former interior under secretary was part of, and has not distanced
himself from, the controversial mineral-leasing policies of former
Secretary James Watt.
Hodel was strongly supported by American Recreation Coalition President
Derrick Crandall, who applauded him for his openness and receptivity to
outside views.
National Wildlife Federation President Jay Hair neither supported nor
opposed Hodel's confirmation. Hair said Hodel's DOE decisions do "not
leave us with strong reasons to oppose his nomination, nor do they
provide us with a record of performance which would encourage us to
support his confirmation."
